God’s own University, Covenant, has once again taken an audacious leap in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. And this time around, it is in the Young University Rankings (YUR) category.
Covenant, ranked in the 151-200 bracket in 2019, now ranks 101-150 following the release of the 2020 YUR at the Young Universities Summit, held earlier today through virtual broadcast.
The Times Higher Education Young University Rankings list the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger. The Under-50 Rankings echoes the alternative investment market by seeking to identify the intelligent elite that does not necessarily have the historical capital that plays well elsewhere.
Covenant is the only Nigerian University (private and public) featured in the Young University Rankings. This development further validates her pre-eminent position as the best University in Nigeria and West Africa.
This new global ranking comes nine months after Covenant had a significant rise in THE’s flagship rankings, the World University Rankings, from 601-800 to 401-500 bracket. Covenant had since September 2019 improved on her rankings in other categories such as the African Rankings, Subject Rankings, and the Emerging Economies Rankings.
A total of 23 African universities made the 2020 YUR list, with the University of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, the best placed on No. 71. Covenant and Aswan University, Egypt are joint 2nd by being ranked in the same 101-150 bracket. Egypt, with ten universities, dominated the African list. There were also institutions from Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Kenya, and South Africa.
The Head, Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Coursera, Anthony Tattersall, said in his presentation at the Summit that Covenant University has become the first Higher Education Institution in Africa to partner with the worldwide learning platform for full blended learning and the benefits it offers.
Tattersall said: “Covenant University is one of the leading young universities in the world, highly ranked from a leading world standard, focused on education outcomes, and a great beacon of light for the continent (Africa).”
The 2019 best young university, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, again emerged tops. École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne of Switzerland; the Nanyang Technological University of France made second, third, and fourth place respectively, while the City University of Hong Kong was ranked fifth.
According to THE, a vital resource that provides the definitive list of the world’s best universities, the criteria used for the rankings were data collected from the universities, reputation data, and bibliometric data. Overall, the ranking featured more than 400 universities from 66 countries.
To God alone be all the glory!
